12 Gifts of Christmas: Day Three

Day 3: A Book for your favorite food gardener.

Growing your own food is an idea whose time has come… again! With the price of fresh fruit, herbs and veggies, and the news about food contamination, growing your own (or at least some of your own) makes good sense and good cents.

In our loft gift shop we have an assortment of gardening books geared for the food gardener. One of them might be just the right gift for the Foodie on your list!

12 Gifts of Christmas: Day Two

Day 2: A Willow Tree Angel or Figure.

Artist Susan Lordi hand carves each original Willow Tree® sculpture. Using family and friends as models, Susan tries to capture a moment in time, or express a feeling. Pieces are cast from her original carving, and then individually painted by hand. Softly washed colors, carved and metal accents, and representative icons of nature mark Susan’s work.

Willow Tree was introduced in January 2000. The line has grown to encompass those sentiments that we most want to express. To our friends, to our family, to our teachers; to those near and dear, to those far away.

The sculptures are rendered so as to suggest elegance, simplicity, peace and serenity. Forms reveal their expressions through body gestures only… a tilt of the head, placement of the hands, a turn of the body. Emotions are left to the viewer to discern, which makes them personal and powerful. Willow Tree is an understated line that speaks in a compelling way.

This is a line we are discontinuing, but we still have some pieces that might speak just the right sentiment and make just the right gift for someone on your list.

The 12 Gifts of Christmas (From Ferda’s Garden Center, of Course!)

12 more days to decide what to get all those folks on your gift list? We have some suggestions, and you can buy them locally, from our small independently-owned business.

Day 1: Yankee Candles in holiday scents and colors or in popular fragrances for every day. Homes closed up and stuffy become welcoming and warm with the addition of subtle scents and flickering fire light. From $1.99 to $24.99.

December 12th is National Poinsettia Day

We’ll bet you didn’t even know there was a National Poinsettia Day, did you? Check it out here.

We received our first delivery of poinsettias for last weekend, and we have a nice assortment of sizes and colors to choose from.  I read an interesting statistic recently. Did you know that  most poinsettias are purchased by women to decorate their homes at Christmas rather than as gifts? Stop in this week and pick one out!

Grave Blankets

It’s not too late to order a grave blanket, pillow or spray. We can deliver it to the local cemeteries, or you can place it yourself if you like.  We make the standard colors (red plastic flowers and a weatherproof bow) or we can make it more to your style with silks and velvets or a more colorful bow.  We have some available for cash and carry this weekend– beat the nasty weather and buy now.

Pine Basket Workshop This Saturday

Don’t forget to sign up for the Pine Basket Workshop this Saturday at Noon at Ferda’s Garden Center. It costs ony $20 and you’ll get everything you need to create a basket of fresh greenery with pine cones and a bow to decorate your porch or patio this season. We’ll have some add-ins for purchase to make your basket one of a kind. Call to reserve your spot to 740-546-4467.

A Ferda’s Exclusive Greenery Basket

Stop in to see our greenery hanging moss baskets, our own design. They are lush and dripping with fresh greens, cones and a colorful bow. And you won’t find them anywhere else, until the imitators catch on, of course…

Thank You for Joining Us!

Thanks to all of you who came out to support us and the other small business folks who were set up in our loft gift shop this past Saturday. It is good to see that so many of you realize that without community backing, small businesses have a tough time making it, especially in this tighter economy.  Thanks for your support! It means a lot!

A Successful Holiday Open House

Today, November 19th, was our annual Holiday Open House. Did you make it? We had lots of fun, especially the visit from Santa. Gloria has been a good girl, how about you?

Next up, next Saturday (November 26th) we will be promoting Small Business Saturday. This is the day after “Black Friday,” the day we all get up really early and try to beat everyone else to the low-priced goodies at the Mall and the Big Box Stores. The next day is the traditional day to shop at small locally-owned businesses, including ours. We’ll also be providing spaces for local crafters and artists to sell their products. If you like the idea of having choices of where to shop, and you like the idea of keeping more of your dollars in your local economy, this day is for you!

We’ll have some specials in our shop, and some really unique gift items from local craftspersons. You won’t find anything like this at the Mall. Stop out and support your local economy.

Getting Ready for the Holidays

Last week we began the process of changing the store over from a Halloween theme to a Holiday theme. The Thanksgiving decor items are featured more prominently, and the Christmas is working its way into the forefront. (I’d rather wait until after Thanksgiving, too, but that’s just not possible, since our Holiday Open House takes place on November 19th.)

Then, following closely on the heels of the Holiday Open House, we’ll be having our Small Business Saturday promotion on Saturday, November 26th.  We’ll have specials in the store, and we’ll be sharing our space with some artists and craftspersons (even smaller businesses than us.) You’ll find some unique gifts made and sold by folks who live right here in the Valley, and you’ll be supporting small businesses and keeping more of your money circulating locally instead of being sent off to points unknown.
