A Spooky Poem for Halloween Weekend

(Most effective read out loud… just sayin’…)

Little Orphant Annie
by James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916)

Little Orphant Annie’s come to our house to stay,
An’ wash the cups an’ saucers up, an’ brush the crumbs away,
An’ shoo the chickens off the porch, an’ dust the hearth, an’ sweep,
An’ make the fire, an’ bake the bread, an’ earn her board-an’-keep;
An’ all us other childern, when the supper-things is done,
We set around the kitchen fire an’ has the mostest fun
A-list’nin’ to the witch-tales ‘at Annie tells about,
An’ the Gobble-uns ‘at gits you
Ef you
Don’t
Watch
Out!

Wunst they wuz a little boy wouldn’t say his prayers,–
An’ when he went to bed at night, away up-stairs,
His Mammy heerd him holler, an’ his Daddy heerd him bawl,
An’ when they turn’t the kivvers down, he wuzn’t there at all!
An’ they seeked him in the rafter-room, an’ cubby-hole, an’ press,
An’ seeked him up the chimbly-flue, an’ ever’-wheres, I guess;
But all they ever found wuz thist his pants an’ roundabout:–
An’ the Gobble-uns ‘ll git you
Ef you
Don’t
Watch
Out!

An’ one time a little girl ‘ud allus laugh an’ grin,
An’ make fun of ever’ one, an’ all her blood-an’-kin;
An’ wunst, when they was “company,” an’ ole folks wuz there,
She mocked ‘em an’ shocked ‘em, an’ said she didn’t care!
An’ thist as she kicked her heels, an’ turn’t to run an’ hide,
They wuz two great big Black Things a-standin’ by her side,
An’ they snatched her through the ceilin’ ‘fore she knowed what she’s about!
An’ the Gobble-uns ‘ll git you
Ef you
Don’t
Watch
Out!

An’ little Orphant Annie says, when the blaze is blue,
An’ the lamp-wick sputters, an’ the wind goes woo-oo!
An’ you hear the crickets quit, an’ the moon is gray,
An’ the lightnin’-bugs in dew is all squenched away,–
You better mind yer parunts, an’ yer teachurs fond an’ dear,
An’ churish them ‘at loves you, an’ dry the orphant’s tear,
An’ he’p the pore an’ needy ones ‘at clusters all about,
Er the Gobble-uns ‘ll git you
Ef you
Don’t
Watch
Out!

Planting Garlic? Learn How Here.

If you haven’t planted your garlic yet, what are you waiting for?  Learn how to do it here.

We’re Ready, Are You?

Harvestfest begins tomorrow at 9AM. The butterfly tent will be up and the vendors will be ready for you. We’ll be cooking hot dogs soon after and we’re decorated and ready. Are you coming?

Closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 5th

We’ll be closed on Labor Day this year. So if you have plans to do anything in the garden on Monday, shop with us on Saturday (9 to 5) or Sunday (12 to 5.)

Ahhh, August

Isn’t it great that the weather has moderated for a while? The heat and humidity was getting to me, and I’ll bet to you, too. Now that I can stand to be outside during the day, I’ve begun weeding again, and replacing mulch.

And don’t forget the next meeting of the Homesteaders group will take place on Saturday, August 27 at 11:00 AM here at the garden center. Don Feenerty will show us how to make a rain barrel (and one lucky attendee will take it home!) and we’ll be talking about how to use up the bumper crops we’re getting from our gardens about now.

More Concrete Items Coming Today

We had some special orders on the popular concrete items we carry, so Bob is off to fetch some more. Check them out any time after tomorrow.

Happy Summer Solstice!

“Ummm… Happy What?”

The summer solstice happens this year at 5:16 PM on June 21st.

“Just what the heck is the summer solstice, and what does it mean to me?”

The summer solstice, since you asked, is the exact moment when the earth is tilted at an angle that puts the northern hemisphere (that’s us, by the way) at its closest position to the sun. What that means to you and me is that the days from that moment on, begin to get shorter. Well, not actually shorter– they still occupy 24 hours of time. But the part of the day that is dark starts getting a little longer and the part that is light a little shorter on this day.

New Information About the Stink Bugs

As if we don’t have enough bugs to worry about in the US, we now have an imported pest, the Brown Marmorated Stink BugBrown Marmorated Stink BugOther stink bugs are mostly just a nuisance, but this one may become a menace to agricultural crops as well. They arrived in Pennsylvania from China in the 1990′s and are spreading east and west into Ohio. Read about them in this article from Cincinnati.com.

Small Business Saturday– Did You Make It Out?

Dollar SignDid you take advantage of Small Business Saturday to shop at Ferda’s Garden Center or another of your go-to small businesses this weekend? I hope so!  We had sales in the gift shop to benefit you while your loyalty to our small business benefitted us.  A win-win proposition in the best sense.

I’ve been too busy to watch the news to see their take on the Black Friday sales.  I’m sure the big boxes got their share of your shopping dollars this weekend.  But don’t forget about us little guys.  Even if you don’t shop with us this week, go to some of those other small businesses that you would miss if they went away and spend a few dollars there.  The money stays in the area and helps to keep other choices than the big boxes available to you.  Especially in this economy, your choice of where to spend your precious dollars makes a difference!  So happy (small business) shopping!
