Small Business Saturday– Did You Make It Out?
Did you take advantage of Small Business Saturday to shop at Ferda’s Garden Center or another of your go-to small businesses this weekend? I hope so! We had sales in the gift shop to benefit you while your loyalty to our small business benefitted us. A win-win proposition in the best sense.
I’ve been too busy to watch the news to see their take on the Black Friday sales. I’m sure the big boxes got their share of your shopping dollars this weekend. But don’t forget about us little guys. Even if you don’t shop with us this week, go to some of those other small businesses that you would miss if they went away and spend a few dollars there. The money stays in the area and helps to keep other choices than the big boxes available to you. Especially in this economy, your choice of where to spend your precious dollars makes a difference! So happy (small business) shopping!
“Small Business Saturday” Sale
Come on out today and shop during our first ever “Small Business Saturday” Sale. Everything not greenery-related is 25% off today and tomorrow only. (That means grave blankets, wreaths, sprays and such are not on sale, but almost everything else is.)
I was surfing the web this morning and came across a post from Kate Hopkins of The Accidental Hedonist about the reasons to shop at local businesses. It has a neat little chart which shows what happens to the money you spend in big box stores and other chains versus what happens to that same money when you spend it in locally owned businesses. I think it makes it easier to understand.
Don’t forget, if you plan to use your American Express card to qualify for the $25 credit for shopping in a small business you must register your card online before you shop.
And here’s another take on shopping local.

Outside of the Garden Center Is Decorated
Bobby Harr single-handedly decorated the outside of Ferda’s Garden Center this weekend. He is really into decorating for Christmas! After working all day decorating the shop on Friday, he said he couldn’t wait to get home and start on his own house. Now that’s the Holiday Spirit!
It’s time to come in and pick out some new decorating materials to add to your mix. A few new things can make it all look different, without spending a ton of money. Let our decorators help you make a plan and carry it through.

Delivering Grave Blankets
We began to deliver the grave blankets yesterday, and again today in the drizzling rain– umm… not the most fun in the world. But the process goes on– at least it isn’t snowing yet. Snow makes it pretty interesting to deliver to Holly Memorial Gardens, because with flat markers intead of stones, the graves are pretty hard to locate in the snow.
We have a good supply of blankets and pillows on hand right now if you would like to see some before you order, or if you want one to take with you to place yourself. The custom decorated ones are my favorites– the colors are more my style than the traditional red and green ones, but that is a personal choice.

We’ll Begin Making Grave Blankets This Week
It doesn’t seem possible, but it is grave blanket season again! The greens arrived last week, and everything is in place to begin production this week. (A sunny week would be great, since the greenhouses, where the blankets and pillows are created, can get mighty cold if the sun doesn’t shine.)
We cannot begin to place the blankets until the week of the 15th (Sorry, not our rules…) But if you want to see some blankets made up to help you in making a choice of style and size, the inventory of blankets and pillows will grow each day, and there will be plenty of them on the lot by the weekend.
The inside of the store is decorated for Christmas, thanks to our busy little elves. Stop in for a holiday scented Yankee Candle, a Christmas flag, or just some inspiration to get you started at your house…
